All:

I am pleased to announce that the department has been awarded a
federal grant from FEMA to increase our staffing levels.  The SAFER
award is highly competitive and only 300 departments nationwide
receive this grant on an annual basis.  The grant award for Holden is
for 6 FF/EMT's and Paramedics with funding for a 36 month period of
performance.  This type of award allows for the department and the
town to receive funding to offset the costs of the hiring of
personnel.  This is a great opportunity for the department to enhance
our service to the town and better deploy our resources.  We are
currently working with the Finance Committee and the Town Manager on
acceptance of the award.  Hopefully the award will be accepted and we
will begin the process of recruiting the new firefighters.  I will
keep everyone advised as we move through the acceptance process and
determine a final outcome of this award.

Thanks:

Russ

  NEWS RELEASE

FEMA APPROVES $ 926,818 STAFFING FOR ADEQUATE FIRE AND EMERGENCY
RESPONSE (SAFER) GRANT TO THE HOLDEN FIRE DEPARTMENT

BOSTON – The Holden Fire Department in Holden, MA. will receive $
926,818 from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for a
Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) Grant. The
grant will be used to hire 6 new firefighters for the Holden Fire
Department for a three year period.

The Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) Grant
program was created to provide funding directly to fire departments
and volunteer firefighter interest organizations to help them increase
the number of trained front-line firefighters available in their
communities.

The $ 926,818 grant represents a federal cost-share of the total
project cost of $ 1,502,946. The remainder will come from non-federal
sources.

This grant is funded through FEMA’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant
(AFG) program. Eligible applicants include local fire departments,
fire districts, nonaffiliated EMS organizations, tribal fire
departments and State Fire Training Academies. The grant applications
are submitted from each agency directly to FEMA, where the
applications are reviewed and scored by fire service personnel from
throughout the nation.

FEMA obligates funding for this project directly to the recipient
agencies. It is the recipient agency’s responsibility to manage their
grant award within federal guidelines with technical assistance and
monitoring provided by FEMA Fire Program Specialists.

  Additional information about FEMA’s [AFG and/or FP&S and/or SAFER]
grant program(s) may be found at HTTPS://WWW.FEMA.GOV/_FIREGRANTS_.
