YORK BEACH - Gene "Geno" E. Lemay, 65, passed away on Monday, Sept. 29,
2014, in York Hospital.
Gene was born in Worcester, Massachusetts, and grew up in Holden. He was
the son of the late Joseph E. and Irene E. (Charbonneau) Lemay.
He graduated from Wachusett Regional High School in 1966 and enlisted in
the U.S. Navy in September 1966 at the age of 17. He was stationed on
the Aleutian Islands of Adak, Alaska, as a firefighter for the Navy. He
was then stationed in San Diego, California aboard the USS Bennington as
a crew chief and served two tours in Vietnam. He retired in October 1969
and moved back to Holden where he worked as an oil burner technician for
Holden Heating Company. He also served as a volunteer firefighter for
the town for 20 years.
Gene met his future wife Patty on a blind date and they married on Nov.
14, 1970. They shared 43 years together. He went on to become a letter
carrier for the Holden Post Office from 1983 to 2000 when he transferred
to the York Post Office. Gene was with the U.S. Postal service for 25
years before retiring in 2008 due to illness. Since moving to Maine, he
became very involved in the community and the American Legion. He served
as commander of Post 56 for four years. Gene was also a lifetime member
of the VFW and DAV.
He leaves his wife and best friend, Patricia A. (Nagle) Lemay, of York
Beach; son, Sean E. Lemay, and his wife, Rebecca (Atchue) Lemay,
granddaughter Charlotte and grandson Samuel Lemay, all of West Boylston,
Massachusetts, and son, Curtis E. Lemay, and his longtime girlfriend,
Lisa Nunziato, of Dover, N.H.; a brother, Bruce A. Lemay, of Rutland,
Massachusetts; two sisters, Cheryl Sarten, of Delaware, and Sharon
Carter, of Illinois; and a few aunts, uncles and many cousins, nieces
and nephews.
Gene's joy in life was his family, he was very proud of his two sons and
adored his grandchildren. He also got great pleasure from NASCAR, the
New England Patriots and the many friends he made in his community of York.
He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great
friend, a true Legionnaire and supporter of all veterans. His quick wit,
boisterous laugh and many stories will be greatly missed.
There are no calling hours, burial will be private. A celebration of his
life will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday Oct. 12, at the American Legion Post
56, 9 Hannaford Drive, York. In lieu of flowers, donations in his name
can be made to the American Legion Post 56. Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home,
91 Long Sands Road, York, is assisting with arrangements. Visit
