Hey....
We have been advised that a Firefighter with the District of Columbia Fire/EMS died early this morning. Firefighter James Mc Rae III, driver of Truck 12, Number 3 Platoon, died in the line of duty.
FF Mc Rae suffered a heart attack just after 0100 hours this morning. Funeral details to follow.

WEST VIRGINA FF's HURT DURING HOSE TESTING: 2 Beckley firefighters were injured yesterday during hose testing when a burst hose knocked both men 12 to 15 feet into the air. Capt. Gary Raines, a 33-year veteran, and Firefighter Ben Tolliver, the department's youngest member, were both recovering at the hospital. The incident took place around 1100 at Station No. 3 when BFD members were testing a 5" supply line...and as they were doing a "walk-around," a section of the hose burst. The burst then slung the hose w/its metal coupling about 15 feet before it struck Raines and Tolliver. Capt. Raines suffered a laceration on the head and FF Tolliver received both ankle and knee injuries but both were conscious and improving.

PA FF SUFFERS STEAM BURNS:
And in Pennsylvania, a Spring Township volunteer firefighter was critically burned Thursday after a steam pipe burst at a hospital. Kevin Angstadt, 22, a FF with the Spring Township VFD, was in critical condition in Lehigh Valley Hospital with burns to his right ankle and right wrist. Angstadt was burned when he stepped into a depression filled with water, lost his balance and tried to stop his fall with his right hand, as per Fire Commissioner John H. Schach Jr.
A surge in water pressure dislodged a 40-foot section of an 8-inch water line beneath the building. A pipe fell from its supports and leaked cold water onto the steam pipe, causing that pipe to rupture. The steam pipe is in a trench at the bottom of the tunnel that runs between the building and the laundry building.

OHIO APPARATUS KILLS 82 YEAR OLD CIVILIAN DRIVER:
And in Canton, Ohio, an 82-year-old man was killed and his wife was seriously injured when cops said he drove a van into the path of an engine company responding to a call Wednesday. The engine slammed into the driver's side of a van operated by Dale Burlingame, 82. He died, while his wife, Grace, 83, was being treated late Wednesday. Witnesses reported that the pumper truck had its lights, sirens and horns operating as it headed south on Cleveland Avenue NW.

APPARATUS STRUCK-CLOSE CALL IN PA: The Willow Grove VFC was operating with Horsham VFC at a multiple fatality extrication last night. The highway was shut down both directions with Fire Police securing the roadway. Just prior to the road being opened after 0100, their FD traffic control truck was struck by a civilian who was taken into custody by the cops. They had set up the proper work area protection, ALL PPE was in place, they were operating away from the truck behind the cones when the event happened. This is a true close call but a success story on their preparation and training. For more information about "FIRE POLICE", go to www.ResponderSafety.com . NEW NIOSH REPORT: The latest NIOSH report shows the details of a South Dakota Firefighter who died after being struck by a shackle on a recoiling tow rope. here are the details:

AND HERE IS MORE "GOOD" NEWS FOR PA FIREFIGHTERS FROM POLITICIANS WHO HAVE FORGOTTEN WHAT THEY WERE ELECTED FOR:

A budget impasse that appears on the immediate horizon will affect PA Firefighters. "Since employees within the Office of the State Fire Commissioner and State Fire Academy are deemed by the state as non-critical, important work within the fire service will not take place for the duration of the impasse," said Fire Commissioner Edward A. Mann. Among the services that will cease during the furlough are:
·        Processing of loan applications for volunteer fire companies, ambulance services and rescue companies;
·        Preparations for the Volunteer Fire Company/Volunteer Emergency Medical Services grant program;
·        Fire training courses;
·        Participation in fire expos and conventions statewide;
· Fire incident data collection and submission to National Fire Incident Reporting System.

Governor Edward G. Rendell proposed a $27.3 billion budget with several NEW programs, however, members of the State Senate opted, instead, to demand that the budget cut millions of dollars from numerous programs which includes FIRE/EMS related services, such as FIREFIGHTER training in PA.

Cutting FIRE related training programs in a State that only recently was the # 1 state for LODD's in our nation? The same State that was able to REDUCE those deaths, in part, due to aggressive FIREFIGHTER TRAINING? Screwing with the already SMALL FIRE/EMS related budget sounds like such a great idea. Clowns.
Take Care-BE CAREFUL,
BillyG
