In light of recent events, the below message is being sent on behalf of
the Chief at the request of the Town Manager.  Attached to this email is
the department's social media policy for your review.

Thank you,

Chris

All:

I want to take a moment to share an important reminder about how we
conduct ourselves on personal social media. Recent public incidents
across the country have shown how quickly online comments—no matter how
personal—can reflect on our department and our ability to serve the
community.

While each of us has the right to express personal opinions, please
remember:

  *

Anything posted publicly can be linked back to you and, by
    extension, to this department.

  *

Emotional or heated posts can unintentionally damage public trust
and confidence, which are vital to the work we do.

  *

Once credibility is lost, it’s very difficult to regain, and that
can create real consequences for you and for our entire team.

Before posting, ask yourself: *“What do I gain by sharing this?”* If the
answer is only a moment of venting, it may not be worth the risk.

I’m not looking to restrict anyone’s personal expression—just to keep us
all mindful of how our words and actions can be perceived. Thank you for
continuing to represent this department with professionalism both on and
off the job.
