Just a few department updates to pass along.  Our newest career firefighter started his orientation week this morning.  Phillip Brady is coming to the department with experience from the Gardner Fire Department.  He is a FF/EMT, member of the D6 Hazmat team and a member of FEMA USAR MA-TF1.  Please join me in welcoming him to the department.  As of today 4 members of the department, Joe Sposato, Katie Gilchrest, Ed Murphy and Trevor Olson have started the 10 week career recruit training program at the MFA campus in Springfield.  Their graduation date is scheduled for June 21.  Currently Derrick Schonborg is attending the Call/Volunteer recruit program at the MFA Stow Campus.  The program began in March and runs until the end of June.

Recently the DPW Buildings and Grounds Division has been working on renovations at the Chaffins station.  The project is nearing completion and it has allowed us to make the station more habitable for all members along with being a safer environment by encapsulating the gear storage in its own space with direct venting to the outside.  We also will be doing some smaller improvements to the apparatus bay area as well at some point this summer.  I want to thank Deputy Chief Smith for managing this project and even for coming in on a Sunday night to prime and paint the walls.  The anticipated start date for operating an ambulance out of that station 7 days per week 7a-7p is 7/1. 

Over the next month or so, the department will be releasing a comprehensive SOP/SOG document.  This document will take all of the policies and SOG’s that we have had in multiple files, binders and books and put them in one central document.  Once released, each member will receive an email with the entire document and after reviewing it for a period of time, we will have a sign off sheet at HQ for all members to acknowledge receipt of the document.  This has been a long process to get this project completed but moving forward it will make it easier for everyone to understand our SOG’s and know where to look for specific items.
