*Prevent Damage Caused by Ice Dams*
**
Ice dams are acommon sight these days. Those large humps of ice on the
edge of a pitched roof can wreak havoc.Water damage can result when snow
and ice beneath the snow pack begin to melt and run into the ice
dam. With no place to go, the water will seep into the building and can
cause extensive property damage.
The best way to prevent damage from ice dams is to _remove the snow from
the roof_.This will eliminate the source of water.Ice packed gutters are
not necessarily the problem, it is the melted snow from the roof that
becomes dammed up at the ice pack, so take steps to remove the snow.
The presence of icicles at the edge of roofs is usually an indication
that the ice is melting and running off the roof properly. But, icicles
do present their own hazards and should be removed.
Removing ice dams can be challenging.Using an axe or blunt objects to
chip away at the ice is not recommended.Filling nylon stockings with
ice-melt and laying them along the gutter can be effective but can also
damage building materials so caution is advised. Please consult with a
qualified contractor to assist in determining the best method of
clearing ice dams for your buildings.
As we approach another weekend, another weather event is in the
forecast. Please check all roofs and take steps today to prevent roof
related winter damages!
