RE: Editorial 7/5/07

Milton Times editorial (7/5/07) correctly stated that the tragic accident that critically injured Milton Firefighter Antonio Pickens was yet another reminder of what can happen when a drunk driver gets behind the wheel. But the story is much more than that.

Antonio, like all firefighters, goes to work every shift in a danger zone, by the very nature of our job. Antonio put the welfare of the public before his own, as Firefighters so often do. Americans all remember and admire the brave New York Firefighters that went into the World Trade Center on that terrible day in Septe mber, 2001. That is exactly what Antonio and any member of the Milton Fire Department would have done. They are made of the same stuff. That is what Antonio did Saturday evening, June 30th.

Firefighter Antonio Pickens was at the window of car just involved in an accident, asking if anyone was hurt. Something every Milton firefighter has done many times, often in that very same location. As he was checking on the wellbeing of the accident victims he was struck and critically injured. He remains in a coma at this time with many serious injuries. We pray for some good news, but are yet to hear any.

Antonio Pickens lives nearby with his wife Marilyn and their two teenage children. . He has worked most of his 12 year career at Station 4 on Atherton St. No one is better liked or more dedicated to his job than Antonio. They simply do not come any better. All of us at the Milton Fire Department are deeply saddened and our prayers each day are for Antonio, his family and the great medical staff at Beth Israel Trauma Intensive Care Unit.

The Milton Firefighters Local 1116 has set up a donation account to assist the Pickens family financially at this difficult time. All the members of the Milton Firefighters Local 1116, especially Union President Jack Grant, have been with Antonio and his family every day since the accident. Antonio is our true hero here in Milton.

Attached is a letter from me to the local Milton (weekly) news paper.

As stated, Antonio’s condition has not improved. Your prayers and support are appreciated.
